About the module

Democracy


Democracy is at the core of the European system and must be protected and strengthen by informed citizens, providing them with the space for debating and civic participation. The module aims at fostering the development of new ways to protect and strengthen democracy. The participants explore the definition and evolution of democracy and how European institutions implement, support, and safeguard it — and why they require citizens’ involvement.



Location

The Lake Alqueva

Lake Alqueva is the largest European artificial lake, the largest artificial lakes in Europe, built on the River Guadiana, across the border between Portugal and Spain. Lake Alqueva is now a top-rated touristic destination having optimal conditions for outdoor activities and sports (sailing, water-skiing and wakeboarding, canoe, kayak, hiking and biking.

The project Dark Sky Alqueva, the first starlight tourism destination in the world, was included by National Geographic in the seven best places in the world to see the Stars (2016) and awarded in Brussels as “ETIS Social & Cultural Impact Achiever” by the European Commission (2016).
