Biodiversity

Protecting biodiversity is a cut-crossing obligation to preserve our environment, natural heritage, and agricultural system.

The module aims to reinforce the debate on the need for biodiversity conservation. Participants focus on the EU biodiversity goals and the main causes and effects of biodiversity loss on the environment and society as a whole.

Location

Lake Kerkini

The lake is situated in the northeast of the district of Serres, at just 40km from the town of Serres and 100km from Thessaloniki, and it is surrounded by Mounts Belles and Mavrovouni. Its unique wetland has been declared as National Park according to Ramsar Convention and it is one out of ten wetlands of International Importance of Greece. The lake is a rare example of fine human intervention in a superb natural landscape: the delicate balance of the ecosystem has been preserved to offer great benefits to the region. The lake offers the ideal conditions for bird watching. It is one of the best places in Europe for natural watching of about 300 rare and protected bird species that live and breed here.
